Developer CD Projekt Red has explained why Cyberpunk 2077‘s promised multiplayer mode was never released to the public. After a rough start in 2020, developers had to rethink their strategies because the game wasn’t as well received as they had hoped. Multiplayer wasn’t the priority for CD Projekt Red, and so, they worked to improve the single-player experience. What this multiplayer game would have looked like is unknown, since CD Projekt Red kept the project’s specifics securely under wraps and rarely discussed it. Former president and CEO of CDPR, Adam Kicinski, said last year that the studio was “reconsidering” developing a Cyberpunk game with online multiplayer as a standalone product. With the release of Phantom Liberty in 2023, Cyberpunk 2077 will be in even better shape than it was at launch. There’s no doubt that the single-player experience is what drew people to the game, so it made perfect sense for CDPR to focus on improving that rather than adding a multiplayer mode.
